FINE STOCK DISPLAY ON RACECOURSE

Record Entries Received For Annual Fixture

OUTSTANDING EXHIBITION IN FINE WEATHER

Increased entries compared with the silver jubilee show a year ago and a record attendance made the Winton Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s twenty-sixth annual show on Saturday an outstanding success. Held on the racecourse reserve while the association’s property is undergoing extensive improvements, the show benefited from the fine appointments of the grounds and many of the visitors expressed the opinion that a permanent arrangement with the trustees of the reserve would be to the advantage of the show. The excellent facilities available enabled all the stock exhibits to be penned to the best advantage for inspection by spectators and the parade and competitions were watched in comfort from the grandstand by the majority of the visitors.

Threatening weather in the morning did not continue and the afternoon was beautifully fine. Exhibitors and officials did their work in the early morning amid light showers, but the grounds were dry for the afternoon programme, the ample shelter belts surrounding the grounds giving protection from a westerly wind and enabling visitors to picnic in picturesque surroundings.

The increasecfentries in most of the live-stock sections’ permitted the potentialities of the district in pastoral activities to be well demonstrated. The quality of the stock exhibits was fully up to the highest standard established at former Winton shows and was an indication that the sound methods of stock breeding established in Southland many years .ago are being maintained. Entries were drawn from a wide area and the show gave increasing promise of becoming a really representative exhibition for the Central and Western districts of the province. The recent progress has been so marked that the association may soon have to consider holding a two-days show because the judging of some of the sections tends to occupy too much time to permit an early parade and a full afternoon of competitions, which are the real attraction of the show for many visitors. •
