INVERCARGILL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP DICK BEATS A. THOM IN SEMI-FINAL In a semi-final of the Invercargill Golf Club’s championship J. S. Dick caused an upset by defeating A. Thom, a former champion, by 3 and 2. Dick will meet J. A. Thom in the final over 36 holes next week-end. The junior championship has been won by C. L. Stubbs, who defeated M. H. Mitchel in the 36-hole final by 8 and 6. Taking the lead at the first hole against A. Thom, Dick held it all the way, being 5 up at one stage. Both were fairly steady through the green, but Dick held an advantage when it came to putting. Thom began badly, hooking two balls out of bounds at the first hole, which he conceded to his opponent. A 4 at the second made Dick 2 up, and his lead was increased to three when he won the fourth after the third had been halved. Thom could not do better than 5 at Dunns Road, which Dick won. Two good birdie 4 s halved the sixth, Dick getting another birdie to win the seventh and become 5 up. Thom had his first win at the long eighth and followed it with another at the ninth, being 3 down at the turn. Dick was out in approximately 38, equalling the scratch score, Thom taking four more. After the tenth and eleventh had been halved, Dick tightened his grip on the game by running down a good putt for a birdie 2 at the twelfth. Fives halved the next. The fourteenth (Manuka) was a bad hole, Thom getting a win with a 6. He reduced his opponent’s lead to two with a 4 at the fifteenth, but could not match Dick’s 4 at Knolls, where the game ended. JUNIOR FINAL For a junior - championship final the golf played by Stubbs and Mitchel was very good. In the morning they had a keen contest over the first nine holes and were all square at the turn. Mitchel took the tenth and eleventh with s’s. He was still 2 up going to the thirteenth tee, but Stubbs then got going and won the next four holes with 5 5 4 4. The seventeenth was halved in 4’s, Stubbs taking the eighteenth with a well-played bogey 4. Stubbs was round in 85 and field a lead of three holes. Mitchel had a round of 88. The first and second holes in the afternoon were halved. Stubbs won the third with a 5, but lost the next to Mitchel’s 3. A bogey 4 followed by a birdie 4 gave Stubfis two more holes and made him 5 up. Mitchel won the seventh with a 4, but played the next two badly, losing both. With nine holes to play Stubbs held the commanding lead of 6 up. The tenth was also won by Stubbs, who was dormy seven when the eleventh had been halved. His 3 at the twelfth won the hole and the match. MEDAL HANDICAP The November medal handicap was played at Otatara on Saturday afternoon in fine weather.
