OBITUARY

MR HENRY G. CARMAN (United Press Association) ELTHAM, November 25. The death occurred this morning of Mr Henry George Carman, a prominent business man. He had been active in public affairs in Eltham for 36 years and was elected the first chairman of the Taranaki Electric Power Board in 1922, holding this office until his retirement this year. He retained his membership of the board as the representative of Eltham. Mr Carman served for many years on the Borough Council, the Chamber of Commerce and other local institutions. He was a foundation member of the Bowling Club and a life member. Born at Onehunga 65 years ago Mr Carman later went to live at Wellington with his parents at a very early age. Mrs Carman died five years ago. He is survived by one son, two daughters, three brothers and two sisters.' MR A. McD. HOWDEN (United Press Association) . AUCKLAND, November 25. The death has occurred of Mr Alister McDonald Howden, aged 64, a former Auckland and New Zealand representative cricketer. Born in Scotland, he was educated in England and at the Otago Boys’ High School. He was stationed in the Bank of Australasia in Invercargill and Dunedin and was later a grain and produce merchant at Auckland for more than. 30 years. He had been a share broker since 1932. As a leg-break bowler Mr Howden won a place in the New Zealand cricket team against Australia in 1910. Before the war he was a well-known golfer. He leaves a wife and four sons. One, lan Howden, is a prominent cricketer. MR H. L. MICHEL (United Press Association) HOKITIKA, November 25.

The death has occurred of Mr Henry Leslie Michel, youngest son of the late Hon. H. L. Michel. He was 44 years of age and a native of Hokitika, and is survived by his widow, his mother, two sisters and three brothers. He was Deputy-Mayor of Hokitika and a prominent member of Lodge Westland Kilwinning. REV. ARTHUR HARDING WELLINGTON, November 25. . The death has occurred of the Rev. Arthur Harding, of Lower Hutt, official chaplain to the Wellington Hospital, at the age of 77 years. For many years he was a well-known minister of the Methodist Church. MR JAMES McGLINCHEY

The death has occurred at Edendale of Mr James McGlinchey. Born in County Donegal, Ireland, 87 years ago, he spent his early days there and 65 years ago was married to Miss Catherine McSorley, of County Tyrone, Ireland. In the year 1877 with their young son, they came out to New Zealand, landing at Lyttelton, and going on to make their home at Rangiora. After a short time they went to the Oamaru district and then came to Menzies Ferry where fol many years they successfully farmed the property now owned by Mr Edward Todd. For a number of years Mr McGlinchey was a director of the Wyndham dairy factory and he also took an interest in the Wyndham Agricultural and Pastoral Society. A keen follower of racing and trotting, he at one time owned the trotting horse Away,. one of the champions of his time in Southland. Mrs McGlinchey died about 17 years ago and three years later their youngest son, Mr Patrick McGlinchey, died after a long illness caused by war injuries. For many years Mr McGlinchey lived in retirement at the home of his elder daughter, Mrs H. O’Neill, of Edendale. He is survived by four sons and two daughters:—Messrs John McGlinchey (Wyndham), Daniel McGlinchey (Wellington), James McGlinchey (Edendale) and Mesdames H. O’Neill (Edendale) and Caulfield (Invercargill). There are alsfo 23 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place to the Wyndham cemetery, the services being conducted by the Rev. Father Martin.
