WOMEN’S DIVISION

SEAWARD DOWNS BRANCH There was a big attendance, including three new members, at the meeting of the Seaward Downs branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. A letter of thanks was received from the collector of the Makogai Leper Fund. An invitation was received to the birthday party of the Wyndham branch. Mrs T. A. Smith, Winton, gave a talk on the work of the division and a demonstration on the making of satin cushions and crochet coat hangers. She also gave some useful household hints. Mrs Smart, Winton, sang two solos. Mrs McCorkindale proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Smith and her assistant for their demonstration and also to Mrs Smart for her singing.

The competition was for thp best arranged vase of flowers, the judges being Mesdames Smith and Maley, of Winton. Prize-winners were Mrs McCorkindale 1, Mrs R. S. Weir 2. The flowers were sent to a sick member. Mrs P. Arnott, a former president, attended the meeting. The hostesses were Mesdames Crosbie, Bagrie and Bryand. The members were the guests of the district hall committee at a social evening, when dancing and progressive euchre were held.

Mrs Bagrie thanked the members of the division for the help they had given in assisting the hall committee to organize the recent successful bazaar, eventually wiping the debt off the hall. The winners of the euchre were: Mrs R. G. Weir (women) and Mr R. Wylie (men).

The music was supplied by Misses Drysdale, Morton and Crosbie. SOUTH HILLEND BRANCH

Mrs W. Langford presided over the monthly meeting of the South'Millend blanch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union.

A motion of sympathy was passed with Misses T. Kean, C. Muir and E. Hazlett in their illnesses and with the members of the Kean, Taylor, Kelly and Cunningham families in their bereavements.

The roll call was “the recipe for a summer pudding.” Competitions resulted: Best bloom: Mrs Murphy 1, Miss Dykes 2. Six pieces

of coco-nut ice: Miss G. Taylor 1, Miss E. Ewan 2. It was decided to provide gifts for a Christmas tree for the school children. Mrs Soper (Dunedin)' gave a demonstration on how to make and adjust a mustard plaster, a starch poultice, a fomentation and also how to attend to an invalid’s bed.

A social hour was spent, songs being contributed by Mesdames W. Langford, Dykes and Miss G. Taylor. Instrumental items by Misses M. Kirkwood and J. Cunningham and recitations by Misses M. Dykes and J. Langford. Mrs R. Woods arranged a “Garden party” competition, which was won by Miss M. Boyle. Mrs Dykes played the accompaniments. Mrs J. Hazlett and Misses E. and M. Watson were hostesses.
