MURDER EXPOSED BY DICTOGRAPH
SUSPECTED MEN TALK IN CELL (Received November 25, 6.30 p.m.) DAUPHIN (Manitoba), November 24. Convicted through a dictograph which was hidden in their cell, Peter Kortens, Daniel Prytuk and Daniel Kanuka were sentenced to hang for the fatal beating of a farm woman, Anna Cottick, aged 81, during a burglary after her husband had been clubbed into unconsciousness.
This is ihe first time in Manitoba that dictagraph records have been admitted as evidence.
The police listened in while the accused discussed the crime, agreeing among themselves that they should not have done it. A police stenographer recorded every word, ensuring accuracy, and another stenographer made a similar recording in an adjoining room.
