FELIX SWINSTEAD’S RECITAL
Tonight in the United Friendly Societies’ Hall, Tay street, Mr Felix Swinstead the famous English composerpianist will give a pianoforte _ recital under the auspices of the University Association of Southland. Mr Swinstead’s compositions enjoy universal recognition and every page of his numerous works bears the stamp of a musical temperament that is not satisfied with the form modern musicians have evolved to establish their claim to individual distinction, but seeks to express an emotion with an idiom entirely his own. He shows himself possessed to a marked degree of that power which Mozart had, of making his thematic ideas, types of melody, harmonic scheme and the colour of a work spring out, in all his writings. Outstanding examples are the brilliant “Prelude in D major,” “Festivity,”' “Patinage” (skating), “To The Moon,”
“Sir Roger,” “In The Cathedral,” “Jolly Roger,” and “Thanksgiving,” all of which will be played tonight besides the humorous “Oh, dear, what can the matter be?” and variations on “My Brown Boy,” a delightful Hungarian folk song. Mr Swinstead will also play Chopin’s “Ballade in G minor,” “Fantasie Impromptu,” Nocturne in F sharp major, Etudes in Gb (black keys) and F minor, and the “Berceuse”; also Debussy’s “Minstrels,” and Liszt’s concert study in D flat major. The booking has been heavy and patrons, are advised to secure seats from Begg’s.
