SOUTHLAND FARM FOR RESEARCH

COMMITTEE FAILS TO SECURE SITE ANOTHER REQUEST MADE TO GOVERNMENT Statements that difficulty in securing a suitable property had been experienced by the special committee appointed by the Minister of Agriculture to select a site for the proposed. experimental farm in Southland or Otago were made at the meeting of the Southland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday and it was decided again to press on the Government the necessity for establishing such a farm in Southland.

The chairman (Mr G. Stevenson) said that a telegram had been received from the president (Mr A. R. Johnston), who was in Wellington, suggesting that the Government be again urged to establish an experimental farm in Southland. It was stated that the committee had been unable to secure a suitable farm of the necessary size in Southland or South Otago. Members urged that efforts should be made to ensure that Southland did not lose the prospects of an experimental farm in the province. Mr D. McDoriald said a possible solution would be the enlarging of rhe Winton experimental farm to make it the chief experimental farm in Otago and Southland. The chairman said that a site more handy both to Otago and Southland was desired so that the farm would be of the greatest benefit to both provinces.

It was decided to request the Government to take immediate action to establish a fully-equipped experimental farm in Southland.
