SECRET SOCIETY
CATCH-’EM-ALIVE-O! By Michael Burt. W. and R. Chambers, through
Whitcombe and Tombs. Price 7/6. Mr Burt’s story begins with the murder of a Director of Military Intelligence by an Indian secret society, the Lal Kirpan. The narrator is the murdered man’s nephew, Captain Colinet of the Indian Army, who arrives in London a few days after his uncle’s death. He joins in the search for the murderer and before long an attempt is made upon his own life and that of a higher official who is unravelling the mystery of the society’s organization. The chase leads to India, where Captain Colinet goes as a member of the British secret service. Mr Burt’s book is written in rather too leisurely a manner for a thriller and some of his characters are unconvincing. But it is a readable tale with an exciting climax.
