ORCHARD WORKERS’ AGREEMENT
To The Editor Sir,—lt has come under the notice of several union orchard workers here that orchardists in Central Otago, big orchardists, employ high school boys for the purposes of fruit thinning, usually starting in December. This sort of thing is a ghastly breach of the Orchard Workers’ Agreement . The orchardists are given a guaranteed price by the Government to help pay decent wages' to adult workers. This kind of cheap labour, exploiting school boys, is nothing short of a scandal. Workers have now got their agreement, but the union secretaries must be asleep if they do not notice these things. They should force all employed on orchard work to join the union, and no doubt this season will see all workers, schoolboys included, compelled to join. Orchard hands pay 25/- a year to their union and should have the protection of the Arbitration Court against exploitation of their rights.—Yours, etc., ORCHARD WORKER. November 23, 1938.
