The appointment of Mr George Patrick Shepherd as Judge of the Native Land Court for Ikaroa and the South Island Native Land Court district was gazetted last night. The appointment was also gazetted of Mr John Harvey as Judge of the Native Land Court for the Waiariki Native Land Court district.—Press Association.

Mr W. Grieve, president of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce, was appointed at a meeting yesterday to represent the chamber on the Invercargill advisory committee of the South Islands Travel Association.

Mr W. Watson, who has been attached to the staff of The National Mortgage and Agency Co. Ltd., and has acted as its representative at Winton for the last 14 years, has accepted a position as fat stock buyer for Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Ltd. Mr Watson will take up his new position next month and will live at Gore.

Mr C. E. Critchley, the Australian Trade Commissioner, may visit Invercargill near the end of January or the beginning of February. In a letter received at a meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce yesterday Mr Critchley thanked the chamber for its invitation to visit Invercargill and said he would endeavour to visit the city some time towards the end of January or the beginning of February.

Mr G. S. Tomkinson, 0.8. E., of Kidderminster, England, is at present visiting Invercargill and is staying at the Grand Hotel.

Tire appointment of Colonel F. T. Bowerbank, honorary physician to the Governor-General, New Zealand Medical Corps, as Director of Medical Services is extended to November 30, 1939, according to a notice appearing in the Gazette last night.—Press Association. Mr Robert Moffat, senior inspector of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., retired this month on ill-health pension, 18 months before his normal retirement date. Mr Moffat entered the service of the National Bank at Milton 40'years ago. During the last 18 years he has served in an executive capacity as manager at the Hastings, Te Aro, and Dunedin branches, and for two periods as inspector at the general manager’s office, first as branch inspector, and during the past four years as senior inspector. Because of a recent unfortunate disability affecting his eyesight, Mr Moffat, on medical advice, sought retirement from the bank’s service.

At a meeting of the Southland Technical College Board of Managers last evening, the acting chairman, Mr A. le H. Hoyles, referred to the death of Mrs J. H. Reed, the wife of the chairman. A motion of sympathy was carried.
