SECOND EVENING SPORTS

AMATEUR ATHLETES IN FORM

GOOD PERFORMANCES ON ' HEAVY TRACKS

Although drizzling rain fell throughout, the Southland Amateur Athletic Association’s second evening sports meeting, held at Rugby Park last evening, was an unqualified success. Dig entries were received, competition was keen and the standard of performances was high, making the evening an enjoyable one for the good crowd ot SP That°R S Mahony, the Southland high hurdles champion, is also a sprinter of more than'average ability he showed by winning the 100 yards °P 8 !J. handicap on a heavy track from a big field. Handicapped on three yards, he won both his heat and the. final in a very convincing manner. K. Laidlaw, of the Collegiate Club, Southland s most promising ‘ junior sprinter, put up an excellent performance to run second off the two-yards mark. Ho won his heat in 11 seconds and was only half-a-yard behind Mahony in the final. The 220 yards junior handicap went to L. Chambers, of the Southland Boys’ High School, who just beat W. Eastlake, of the Invercargill Club, by a stride in the final. It was a fine race and one that showed that there is good material among the junior sprinters of‘lnvercargill. Although he is more at home in halfmile and mile events, F. W. Mayne, of the Invercargill Club, made no mistakes in winning the quarter mile open handicap. Starting from the eightyards mark, Mayne gathered in the limit men early, ran with them for a furlong and then came away with a great finishing burst to win by a yard. W. Donaldson, the scratch man, ran well and crime within striking distance of Mayne at the top of the straight. Lack of training told when he attempted to hold Mayne in a sprint, however, and he faded over the last few yards. G. McLachlan, another Invercargill Club runner, was close up in third place. The men’s and women’s inter-busi-ness house relay races again provided the highlights of the programme. Good entries were received for both events and racing was keen. The women’s event was won by the Technical College team, which just beat Thomson and Beattie’s in an exciting finish. The Invercargill Football Club won the men’s relay after a great tussle with Poole’s team.

The .Calder Mackay cycle handicap of one mile and a-half attracted a big entry, two heats being necessary. The final, to the winner of which goes a bicycle given by the firm, is to be held at the next evening meeting.
