WOMEN’S DIVISION

INVERCARGILL BRANCH The Invercargill branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers Union celebrated its twelfth birthday at a social afternoon. The president, Mrs C. McKenzie was given a bouquet of roses, made and presented by Mrs Randle. . , , Community singing accompanied by Mrs M. Mclntosh was enjoyed. Two competitions were held, the winners being Mrs Parsons and Mrs Martin. Solos were given by Mrs Craigie, Mrs T. H. Anderson and Mrs Parsons. Miss Ryan, newest member of the branch, lit the candles, which were blown out by Mrs W. H. King. Mrs W. H. Ward then cut the cake wishing the branch continued success in the future. She spoke of the splendid progress the division was making all over New Zealand. ■ Following this, slices of the cake were cut by representatives of the following branches: Browps, Edendale, Seaward Downs, Rimu, Greenhills, Hedgehope, Winton, Fortrose, Waikiwi, Wrights Bush, Otatara, West Plains and Tussock Creek. A presentation was made to Betty Riddle infant daughter of a member. NIGHTCAPS BRANCH The Wairio hall was filled for the birthday social of the Nightcaps branch of the Women’s Division of the Fanners’ Union, visitors being present from Balfour, Winton, Ohai, Scotts Gap, Opio, Nightcaps, Otautau and Aparima. Misses Mary and Bessie Sinclair presented biuquets to Mrs Orr, Southland provincial president and Mrs T. S. Smith, Winton. Songs were sung by Mrs J. Cutt, Mrs McLeod, Mrs J. Grant, Mrs Smart and Miss Brown. Pianoforte solos were given by Miss Joyce Excell and Miss Frances Ayton. An autograph competition was won by Mrs Pemberton, Nightcaps and the “lucky cup” competition by Miss Ayton, Aparima. Afternon tea was served and the birthday cake made and presented by Mrs S. J. Collie was cut. Mrs Collie lit the candles and Mrs P. Sinclair extinguished them. Mrs Orr cut the first slice and in doing so congratulated the Nightcaps branch on attaining its seventh birthday. She also addressed the meeting on the aims and objects of the Women’s Division. The president, Mrs G. Taylor, then asked a representative from each organization present to come forward and cut a piece- of the birthday cake. Mrs Balneaves replied on behalf of the Ohai Women’s Institute, Mrs Soper, Wairio Women’s Institute, Mrs Dixon, Nightcaps Women’s Institute, Mrs Smith, Winton branch, Mrs Kane, Scotts Gap branch, and Miss Muirhead, Otautau branch. LOCHIEL BRANCH At the meeting of the Lochiel branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union the bloom competition resulted: Mrs J. Crane, Mrs D. C. Legat find Miss J. Cunningham 1 eq, with separate blooms.
