The News Chronicle gives prominence to an eye-witness account of the alleged torture and murder of German Jews at the Sachsenhauser concentration camp during the pogrom. It states that 62 Jews from Berlin were forced to enter the camp between lines of Black Guards who, armed, with clubs and spades, flogged the victims mercilessly for 30 minutes, killing 12 by smashing their skulls. Herr Hitler received the new French Ambassador (M. Coulondre) who when presenting his credentials declared that France and Germany had been enemies on the battlefield and had learned mutual respect. He added that a common frontier, trade and industry made it desirable to live in harmony. Herr Hitler responded that the two countries had every reason to foster their neighbourliness. Peaceful FrancoGerman competition could contribute to an all-round improvement in Europe, he said.
