ATHLETICS

SUCCESSES OF SEASON REVIEWED ST PAUL’S HARRIER AND ATHLETIC CLUB The many successes that were enjoyed by the St. Paul’s Harrier and { Amateur Athletic Club, during the < winter season were reviewed at the ) annual dinner held by the club last j night. Mr T. B. Dorman presided. ( The chairman congratulated the ( club on its successful winter season, j during which it had won the inter- , club relay, the George Mcßurney j memorial cup, the cross-country shield and the'. road race. He also gave a 5 welcome to the new members. . c The toast of the sport was proposed ; by Mr W. E. Mclndoe. Referring to ( the activities of the Otago Athletic Association he said that the association ' had done much to help' the sport. . During next month two Australian ; athletes would be in Invercargill for a day or two for coaching and would probably return on January 16 to compete in an evening meeting. The visit by these two athletes had been sponsored by the Otago association. Em- j phasizing the need for more competi- j tion, he said that the sport depended j on the club members and more par- j ticularly those who competed. There , was a tendency for competitors to begin training too late. This was a big mistake. The club Had enjoyed a good 3 winter season, but it could not live on , past successes. For that reason he , hoped that in the coming season the club members would do e y erytl Jl?f possible to make it successful. The club was deeply indebted to> the In vercargill Amateur Cycling Club because of its assistance in making the j sports meetings more interesting. j “I would like to urge members to get fit,” said Mr Mclndoe. “Fitness, of | course, comes only with a lot of discipline, but after all it is one of the . benefits of the sport. Many of the I competitors make the mistake of entering in too many events. It will. be , seen that the successful, competitors are those who specialize. Replying ort behalf of the Southland Amateur Athletic Association, and the Invercargill, club Mr W. Torrance said that the athletes were well .satisfied with the way in which the sport was controlled. He paid a tribute to. the work of the secretary of the. association, Mr John Walker. Referring to the death of Mr T. Pickering Mr Torrance stated that he was one of die finest young men who had competed m running in Southland. " _ , Replies were also made by Messrs D. Dorman ’(Otago association and Otago University), I. Muirson (club champions), George Murray (Collegia e Club), D. Patton (Invercargill Cycling C The toast of the president and. vicepresidents was proposed by Mr K. Clarke In his reply Mr J. D. Gilmore outlined proposals for a new sports ground in Invercargill and asked for the cooperation of all the clubs.
