GROWING SOYA BEANS IN NORTH

During the past year the Department of Agriculture has been carrying out experiments in the Whangarei district in the cultivation of soya beans, but these have not proved highly successful. Some varieties reached maturity, but others' were too late for the northern climate, and did not pod. Although the plants grew well the weather conditions were not’ suitable for harvesting. The humid weather conditions of last autumn were against the success of the experiments. Nevertheless, it can be taken that generally the weather conditions in the north would not be suitable and that soya bean cultivation in the area would not be successful.

The department’s experiments have shown that the garden variety of Canadian runner bean is perhaps the best suited for the north, as this bean pods early, and so can be harvested under favourable conditions.
