GARDEN CLUB ADDRESSES BY VISITORS There was a big attendance at the monthly meeting of the Otautau Garden Club. Mr W. J. Wesney presided. It was decided to ask the Rev. E. B. Stevenson, Nightcaps, to give an address on gladioli at the November meeting, and to write to Mr Speden, Gore, requesting him to speak on rhododendrons at the December meeting. It was also decided to write to the members of the Nightcaps Club inviting them to attend the November meetmThe executive was authorized to revise the show schedule and submit it to the next meeting. In welcoming two new members, the chairman said that the membership and attendance was being well maintained and the club was making a bold bid for the largest membership in the Western District. The chairman introduced Messrs Lennie, Bain, Carter and Aitken, members of the Invercargill club, and welcomed them on behalf of the members. Mr Lennie gave an interesting address on “The Sowing. of Seed,” and Mr Aitken spoke on “Bulbs other than Daffodils.” Both emphasized the dangers of too much moisture and too much heat. He also advised members to plant hyacinths deep if they wanted big blooms. In moving a vote of thanks on behalf of the visitors, Mr Carter said they always enjoyed coming to Otautau. The idea for the monthly competition for single blooms, collection of flowers, and vegetables, instituted by Otautau, had been adopted by the members of his club. 1 A suggestion was made that Otautau members should travel to Invercargill on the first Tuesday in December to hear an address on roses by Mr Mills, and also to take part in the meeting.
