SIR JULIEN CAHN CHOOSES GOOD ALL-ROUND TEAM
The announcement of the team Sir Julien Cahn is bringing to New Zealand would be well received in New Zealand. Sir Julien has at his command a wonderful array of cricketing talent and the hope that much of the best of it would make up the team for New Zealand has been realized. Recognized as one of the most enthusiastic cricketers in England, Sir Julien has gained a reputation for organizing tours by powerful teams comprising a number of players of international fame. He has taken teams to Jamaica, Argentina, Denmark, Jutland, Canada, Bermuda and Ceylon. The inclusion of C. S. Dempster is of special interest to New Zealand and many will watch the game to see the former New Zealander in action on the fields from which he stepped to cricket fame. Dempster is one of New Zealand s greatest cricketers. He was a member of the first New Zealand team to visit England, in 1927, and has won the
Redpath Cup, the highest individual award in New Zealand cricket. Dempster first entered Plunket Shield cricket in New Zealand in 1923. That year he was a member of the Wellington team which visited Dunedin and although he did not get many runs his fielding greatly impressed.the spectators.
He has compiled a record in batting equal to that of some of the best-known batsmen in the world, and in newspaper selections in recent years he has been given a place in a world team. His style is attractive, but he has the solidity of the opening batsman and on a bowler’s wicket he has been a hard man to shift. He is at present captain of the Leicestershire County team. Ever since accepting a professional engagement in England he has shown remarkable consistency with /he bat and almost invariably is near the top of the averages in England. The former Australian players, Jackson, Lush, Mudge and Walsh, all of whom are now playing in England, will be welcome in New Zealand.
Lush, who is attached to the literary staff of The Nottingham Guardian, earned a fine reputation as a bowler in Sheffield Shield cricket and was a candidate for an Australian eleven, and Mudge was at one time looked upon as a successor to C. V. Grimmett. Jackson is a brilliant all-rounder.
Hardstaff will be making his thi:fl tour to New Zealand. He was here
with E. R. T. Holmes’s side and again toured New Zealand with G. O. B. Allen’s team.
Oldfield, Phillipson, Smith and Watts all are promising batsmen, and Watts has had considerable success as a bowler.
G. R. Maxwell, of Nottingham, will be the wicketkeeper. A. H. Dyson (Glamorgan) is one of England’s foremost opening batsmen. He has regularly scored 1000 runs for the season. s
Sir Julien Cahn’s side will play nine matches in the Dominion, including a game against New Zealand at Wellington, and provincial fixtures in each of the other three centres. The tour will open with a match against a combined North Island colleges’ team at Auckland on February 11, and will conclude with a game against the Auckland provincial side at Eden Park on March 17, 18 and 20.
