EXCELLENT WEATHER DURING SEASON

YACHT AND MOTOR-BOAT ASSOCIATION’S REPORT i ' “The excellent, weather experienced throughout the province during the " season in review, gave .Southland yachtsmen every opportunity for the enjoyment of their sport,” states the annual report of the Southland Provincial Yacfit and Motor-Boat Association to be presented at the annual meeting tonight. “The various regattas and traces again proved popular and assisted greatly in making the season a successful one,” the report continues. “The Bluff regatta again proved very successful and some interesting sailing was witnessed. The races for the Sports Trust trophies were keenly contested. and resulted in Mr J. Shannon’s Vorena, sailed by Mr V. Bragg, winning the Sanders Cup class championship. Mr J. Speden retained the restricted class championship with the Foam. After winning the Sanders Cup trials with Vorena, Mr V. Bragg found it impossible for him to the contest. ’ It was therefore decided to' hold a-fur-ther series of trials which resulted inthe Stewart Island yacht, Lavina, being selected to represent the province, with Mr G. Bragg-as skipper. “Sailing races figured more prominently on the programme at the Riverton regatta than in the past and two most enjoyable races wete sailed. The association’s inter-club cup was contested for the first time, the race resulting in a narrow win for Rawene, sailed by Mr R. Gough. “The Fortrose regatta again provided a most enjoyable outing for Southland yachtsmen. Four Invercargill boats were present and this made a good field in all events. SEPARATE REPRESENTATIVES “A decision of special importance to the yachtsmen at Stewart Island was ■ reached at the last meeting of the Sanders Cup Memorial Committee. It was decided that in view of the disadvantages confronting those ports not within reasonable distance of the headquarters of the association to which they are affiliated, that these ports, namely, Whangarei, Tauranga, Timaru and Stewart Island, be allowed a separate representative in future contests. In accordance with this ruling, Southland and. Stewart Island will have separate representatives at next year’s contest. “The province was represented in the Sanders Cup contests by the Stewart Island boat, Lavina, which was successful in one race of the series. Our congratulations are extended •to . the successful Wellington representative, Kitty, and her crew under the capable generalship of Mr Nigel Blair. The contest for 1939 is to be held at Bluff, starting on January 18, so that Southland yachtsmen have an active season ahead of them. It is hoped that, all supporters of the sport will assist towards making this event a memorable one for the visiting yachtsmen ”
