HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

THREE RECORDS BROKEN

Keen Racing On Heavy Tracks PERFORMANCES OF HIGH STANDARD Although it rained steadily all day and the tracks were sodden and heavy, performances at the annual athletic sports of the Southland Boys’ High School yesterday were of a high standard. Three records were broken during the day, and, if conditions had been better, more might have bean broken. As it was, competitors, in more than one event went close to equalling the standing record. Perhaps the outstanding performance of the day was that of G. M. Webb, who won the 100 yards intermediate championship in 10 4-ssec, clipping one-fifth of a second from the record established by T. Pedlar last year. Webb’s time was also two-fifths of a second faster than that of Pedlar in the senior championship. If the day had been fine it would have been a great performance; under the conditions, it was outstanding. The other record-breakers were I. Muirson and I. B. Watson. Muirson won the shot putt with a putt of 38ft sJin, adding eight and a-half inches to the record established by G. Kingston in 1917. Watson bettered the existing figures for the junior high jump by an inch, jumping 4ft ll|in. Because of the unpleasant conditions, some events were not decided yesterday. The winners of the senior and junior championships are, however, beyond dispute. Pedlar is leading in the senior championship with 15 points, and Muir - son and Robertson are next with 10 points each. Watson has 15 points in the junior championship and Penning - ton is runner-up with eight. Features of the meeting were the big entries in all events, the. keenness of the competition, and the efficient manner in which the programme was controlled by the members of the teaching staff. . . , In the Todd Medal competition, for most points in open sprint events, P. K. H. Smyth is leading with six pointe, and W. A. Chambers is second with five points. . . One event only has been decided m the Bews Cup competition, for the competitor securing most points in middle and long distance events, and A. Pooie is leading with five points.' Muirson has three points. Details are as follows: —
