STERLING EXCHANGE LOWER

INCREASE IN STATE BORROWING

(Special to The Times) WELLINGTON. October 27.

A reduction of £804,755 in the sterling exchange held as assets by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand is shown in the return for the week ended Monday, October 24, compared with last week’s return. Twelve months ago the amount was £17,595,334; this week it stood at £8,313,575. A big drop of £2,255,016 in State deposits is recorded compared with the previous return, and there is a reduction of £88,666 in the deposits held by the trading banks. Advances to the Primary Products Marketing Department total £3,859,205, a reduction of £27,536 compared with last week, but advances for other purposes have risen by £900,000. The increase in this item compared with a year ago is £5,950,000. The proportion of reserve has fallen from 52.27 per cent, to 48.451 per cent. A year ago it was 78.861 per cent. The statement, with variations compared with the week before, is as follows:—
