RECORD BROKEN BY ORONTES

FREMANTLE TO PLYMOUTH IN 27 DAYS LONDON, September 6. A record for the sea passage from Australia to England was set up yesterday when the Orient liner Orontes arrived at Plymouth two days before schedule. She had made the voyage from Fremantle in 27 insead of the normal. 29 days. “We did not set out to break the record,” said C?~ + ain G. G. Thorne. “We just accelerated the journey under instructions. The ship is capable of much greater speed, and had conditions not been unfavourable, owing to the monsoons, we could have been here even sooner.” The instructions which led to the acceleration of the voyage were wirelessed when engine trouble developed in the Oronsay, a sister ship, which is due to leave London for Australia on Saturday, and it was thought that the Orontes would have to take her place. After the Orontes had saved two days between Fremantle and Port Said the defects in the Oronsay were remedied, and Captain Thorne learned yesterday that his record voyage had been accomplished for nothing.
