Sensational Finish In Harcourt Stakes

MAJORITY BEATS SPRINTERS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 24. The last day of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting was held at Trentham in fine weather. The track was slightly holding. The totalizator handled £73,579, compared with £69,079 for the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £172,658, compared with £160,380 last year. G. H. Humphries, rider of Defaulter in the Harcourt Stakes, was fined £lO for careless riding because he nearly lost the race through over-confidence. . Results:—

In a sensational finish Defaulter ran to the front easily at the false rail and led by six lengths. The jockey stopped riding and the big colt took it into his head to stop to a canter and Francis Drake, ridden desperately, just failed to snatch victory on the post. Defaulter repeated a fault that cost him a race against Silver Streak at Dunedin. Francis Drake gained three lengths in the last 10 yards.
