DEFAULTER WINS AGAIN

Sensational Finish In Harcourt Stakes

MAJORITY BEATS SPRINTERS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 24. The last day of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting was held at Trentham in fine weather. The track was slightly holding. The totalizator handled £73,579, compared with £69,079 for the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £172,658, compared with £160,380 last year. G. H. Humphries, rider of Defaulter in the Harcourt Stakes, was fined £lO for careless riding because he nearly lost the race through over-confidence. . Results:—

Southern Blood was fourth. Time, 3.16. Beau Gallant was in front a halfmile from home and got his tongue over the bit. Pango maintained his improvement at the meeting.

Saki hung on well. ,Namara finished strongly from the middle of the field. . Hagen, with every chance, was sixth.

Won by three lengths. Lady Lyric was fourth. Time, 1.29 J. Royal Star and Punurua were always in the van. Tom Tom, Erlick and Dark Eagle were slow away. Into the straight Royal Star II led Misurina, Punurua, Phalanx and Tremor, with Dark Eagle last. In a great finish Royal Star II came again to finish equal with Panurua. Nereus came from well back for a place.

Lucullus Lad made all the pace over the last seven furlongs and hung on well. Waitaka came from second last for fourth. In a sensational finish Defaulter ran to the front easily at the false rail and led by six lengths. The jockey stopped riding and the big colt took it into his head to stop to a canter and Francis Drake, ridden desperately, just failed to snatch victory on the post. Defaulter repeated a fault that cost him a race against Silver Streak at Dunedin. Francis Drake gained three lengths in the last 10 yards.

Dainty Sue came through on the inside at the false rail. Le Toquet finished very strongly on the outside. Waka, Lady Rosette, Rustem and Screamer in a great finish were next.
