WORK WANTED BY AUSTRIANS
ADVERTISEMENTS IN N.Z. NEWSPAPER
PROSPECTIVE IMMIGRANTS APPEAL FOR AID
(Special to The Times) AUCKLAND, October 24. Suggestive of the pathetic conditions under which a section of the population is now living in Austria under German Nazi rule are applications for employment from persons in that country that for about two months past have been appearing in the advertisement columns of The New Zealand Herald. In Saturday’s issue there were no fewer than eight of such advertisements, all the inquirers giving a Vienna address, and in some instances detailing qualifications that appeared to be of a high order. In practically every case applications for employment are received direct from overseas and are not lodged by friends living in Auckland. Generally speaking, the applicants are content to state their experience or other qualifications for a position, but sometimes the appeal for employment is made on emotional grounds. One advertiser on Saturday started his appeal in these terms: “Who will help to save the existence of our two children? Vienna emigrant family asks noble-hearted philanthropist for permits and job.” After describing himself as a Jew he mentioned the qualifications from the aspect of employment of himself and other members of his family. His daughter had experience as a secretary and had a knowledge of typewriting and shorthand, and also of three languages. She was prepared to do domestic work if a secretarial position were not available. MANY DUTIES ACCEPTABLE Indeed, many women advertising from Vienna for positions give a variety of occupations they are prepared to fill, ranging from housekeeping, cooking, secretarial work, nursing, motor driving or the duties of nursery-governess. Several claim proficiency in several languages. Women predominate among applications for employment. There are several printing tradesmen among recent applications by men. On Saturday male applicants claimed experience in the rubber, printing and dairy industries, while one was a ski and sports teacher.
From some of the advertisements it would appear that the addresses given are those of Vienna employment agencies, though in most instances the private address of the inquirer is seemingly given. Some advertisers state they are of Jewish origin and reasons can be appreciated why they desire to immigrate. But whether from Jew or Aryan it is clear, from the general tenor of the advertisements that those responsible feel the urgent need to forsake their homeland and friends and start a new life.
