TE RANGI RINK’S SUCCESS

NORTHEND BOWLS TOURNAMENT GEORGETOWN BEATEN IN FINAL 1 The annual Labour Day rinks tournament conducted yesterday by the Northend Bowling Club was won by a rink from the Te Rangi Club, which beat Georgetown in the final by 24 points to 13. Sixteen rinks from city and country clubs took part. The weather was ideal for bowling, but the green was on the heavy side and fine drawing was not easily mastered. There was much good bowling nevertheless and during the section play some closelycontested games were played. A.young rink from the Nightcaps Club was the only rink to go through the final half of the section play without a loss. Other section winners each lost one game. In the semi-finals Nightcaps was beaten by Georgetown, and Te Rangi beat Edendale, last year’s winner, after being three down on the last end. Some strong rinks were put out of the running in the early rounds. The Northend Club, with five entries, failed to reach the semi-finals. The youngest rink of this club, skipped by A. C. Millar, played exceptionally well, however, and qualified for a section tie. Te Rangi’s success was a popular one, it being the first time since the inception of the tournament in 1932 that a rink from this club took part in the final. Similarly, the Georgetown rink (runner-up) was a finalist for the first time. It was also the first tune that either a Northend or an Invercargill Club rink did not play in the final. Rinks from the Hokonui and Edendale Clubs put up good performances, particularly T. Hickey’s Edendale rink which beat strong Te Rangi and Northend rinks and appeared to have the winning Te Rangi rink beaten up till the last end. The winning rink comprised F. Holloway (lead), L. Marshall (second), G. C. Batchelor (measurer) and M. McKenzie (skip). All played steadily throughout the day. ■ In the final game Te Rangi opened the scoring with a five. Georgetown equalized the scores on the next end and took the lead with a two on the third end. Both links played well and the scores were fairly even for eight ends. On the ninth McKenzie (Te Rangi) took the kitty through to the ditch and scored a six. From then on Te Rangi kept in the lead and won fairly comfortably. Both teams were applauded for their good bowling. Mr J. E. Taylor was supervisor and umpire. Following are the results:—
