GRANTS MADE FOR SWIMMING

ASSOCIATIONS PRAISED BY MINISTER (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 22. Addressing the annual conference of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association today the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) expressed admiration of the work of the association, and stated that the Government was pleased to be able to tesume the subsidy which had been discontinued during the depression years, and which had been, he thought, a bad policy. The associations had used the money wisely in teaching children to swim, and in coaching others to greater efficiency, the Minister said. He expressed appreciation of the National Council of Physical Welfare and Recreation and of the survey made by the society of swimming facilities. The Minister intimated that again this year £560 from the Education Department estimate and £4OO from his own department’s estimate would be available for the teaching of swimming.
