MAINTENANCE OF STEAD STREET

Agreement Between Councils TERMS ACCEPTED BY SOUTHLAND COUNTY The terms of the agreement about the maintenance of Stead street made at a conference between representatives of the Inveicargill City Council and the Southland County Council, were confirmed by the County Council at its meeting yesterday. Following are'the terms of the agreement:— The Southland County Council is to accept the dedication of Endowment road and the bridge over the Oreti river as at present constructed and subject to the Main Highways Board classifying the road and bridge as a main highway. The County Council undertakes, subject to the board’s approval, to carry out sealing work on the road and have it completed within a period of three years from the date of the declaration of the road and the bridge as a highway. Any re-aligning work, reconstruction and so on, which may be necessary to Endowment road will be done at the expense of the Southland County Council and the board.

The City Council is to be responsible for the maintenance and future reconstruction of Stead street bridge and the maintenance, reconstruction and sealing of Stead street for its entire length from the west end of Tweed street to the junction of Stead street with Curran’s road, the City Council to undertake the sealing of the road within a period of three years. The Invercargill City Council is to continue meeting the annual charges on the loan debt on the Oreti river bridge and Endowment road. The Southland County Council is to pay the annual charges on its present loan for the Stead street 'bridge, which are £4BO per annum, the City Council to make a payment to the County Council of £l5O per annum for 10 years, to March 31, 1948. The County Council will assume .responsibility for the actual portion of the roadway used by vehicles and if footpaths and/or cycle tracks are required, the County Council will construct these subject to the approval of the Main Highways Board and the local body cost of the construction and maintenance of ’footpaths and cycle tracks is to be met by the Invercargill City Council. It was agreed that the amounts owing to the City Council by the County Council for maintenance work on Stead street to the date of the confirmation of the settlement be written off. Councillors expressed gratification that the agreement had been completed so satisfactorily. It was decided to apply immediately to the Main Highways Board to have Endowmeht road classified as a main highway. ' The agreement will be considered by the Invercargill City Council at its next meeting.
