SILVER STREAK’S RECOVERY

EXPECTED TO RACE TODAY VETERAN GALLOPER’S GAMENESS (From Our Special Reporter) DUNEDIN, October 7. When Silver Streak defeated Defaulter in the Electric Handicap at Wingatui yesterday he was decidedly lame when he returned to the birdcage. In some quarters the fear was expressed that he had broken down completely and the last had been seen of the veteran Paper Money gelding. When he was putting in a brilliant finishing run in the Electric Handicap which landed him at the post ahead of Defaulter, Silver Streak hung in badly and his rider had to pull him away from Defaulter. It was thought he had broken down in the straight and this was the reason for him boring in.

When Silver Streak was paid up for the Telegraph Handicap to be run tomorrow some surprise was expressed, in view of the decided lameness he showed yesterday. His trainer. T. Hobbs, remarked, however,. that when he was brought out of his box this morning Silver Streak was sounder than when he was produced yesterday and he expected him to go to the post fit and well tomorrow.

Hobbs pointed out that the trouble appeared to be of a chronic nature and repeatedly the gelding was lame after his track work. When raced at Geraldine a fortnight ago Silver Streak pulled up very bad, but recovery. just -as quickly. He is now in his ninth year and is gamer than most horses racing. He still retains much of his old brilliance and is capable of improving on his present fine record. Silver Streak is engaged to race at the Gore meeting at the end of the month.
