Thompson, master) arrived at Bluff last night with mail and passengers from Port Pegasus. The Union Company's trans-Tasman steamer Waitaki finished loading for Melbourne yesterday and sailed last evening. The Union Company's steamer Wainui is expected to reach Bluff from Gisborne tomorrow afternoon. She will begin discharging her cargo on Monday and sails, on completion of loading, for Dunedin. The Government lighthouse steamer Matai, at present at Cape Maria, is to go to Kalpara and is due back at Wellington from her trip to the northern lights on October 25.

From New Orleans the German steamer Naumberg arrived at Auckland on Tuesday. She will leave about Wednesday next for Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. Advice has been received that the Temple Moat, en route from New York, is now due at Auckland at noon today. She will complete discharge at Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Rotorua, from Liverpool, Is scheduled to reach Auckland this morning. The vessel, which is coming to the agency of the Federal Company, will later complete discharge at Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff, and is due at Bluff on October 28. PERSONAL Captain H. West for £5 10/-, costs £1 2/-. Grace Isobel Laker (Mr N. L. Watson) proceeded against Leslie Barton (Mr K. B. Muirson) claiming arrears in rent amounting to £4 12/-, and seeking possession of a house owned by the plaintiff and rented by the defendant. The plaintiff alleged that the property had been damaged. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate gave judgment for the plaintiff for the amount claimed, with costs £2 6/-, q,nd granted possession of the house on or before November 7.

WOMEN’S MISSIONARY UNION The twenty-fifth anniversary of the Bluff branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union was celebrated in the Athenaeum Hall, the proceedings taking the form of a social afternoon. There was a good attendance, guests being present from Invercargill and Ocean Beach. The Rev. T. A. Speer was chairman. Mr Speer extended a welcome to the visitors and referred to the branch’s existence over a period of 25 years. Afternoon tea was served and the ceremony of lighting the birthday cake, supervised by. Mrs Speer, followed. An address was given by Sister Margaret, who traced the growth of the branch since its inception and reviewed the progress made during its 25 years of existence.

Sister Janet, Mrs G. Edginton, and Misses McLeod, Todd and Cowan (Invercargill) also spoke. A bouquet was presented to Sister Margaret by Mrs I. E. Parry. Sister Margaret replied. s During the afternoon songs were sung by Mrs A. M. Wilson and Mrs Crozier.
