SOCIAL SECURITY

To The Editor.

Sir,—What a pity. "Wide-awake Farmer” was not also intelligent, then he would have understood that every person under the age of 35 ceive the full superannuation of £7B a year on attaining the age of 65. Also it is stated that the Labour Party has been telling only half-truths and misleading people. What about the piece of news in the National paper regarding friendly societies ? They say that the friendly societies give £2 a week sick benefit for 12 months, then £1 a week so long as the members are unfit for work, a free hospital bed for 13 weeks, a free doctor and medicine, £3O burial allowance and 30/- a week pension at the age of 60—all for the payment of 1/10 a week and no ifs about it. _ , Now these are the facts—£l a week for six months, 13/- a week for the next six months and 10/- a week until certified fit for work, all less the weekly levy; no free hospital bed; free doctor and perhaps free medicine as so many drugs are today charged for; £3oburial allowance and no pension of 30/- a week at the age of 60. There is a lodge secretary as one of Mr Hall-Jones’s nominators and he knows that what I state is true. What the National News publishes is not true, not even half-true. So why does the kettle call the pot black ?—Yours, etc., ELECTOR. October 7, 1938.
