OBITUARY
MR JOHN J. McNEILL
Mr. John Joseph McNeill, whose death occurred at Queenstown last week, was one of the best-known residents in y the Queenstown district. Born in Queenstown, he was the fourth son of the late Captain James McNeill and_ Mrs McNeill, of One Mile road. Hereceived his education in Queenstown and began work in what was known as Boyne’s store in Ballarat street. He eventually took over the business from Mr A. Boyne and carried it on for many years until the formation of a company. Mr McNeill was popular with every section of the public. He was a prominent footballer in his youth and subsequently served several terms as the Queenstown delegate on the Wakatipu Sub-union.
MR JOHN SMITH
The death has occurred at Tapanui of Mr John Smith, at the age of 83 years,. Mr Smith came with his parents to Kelso in 1877, and later he lived at Greenvale, on part of Logan’s estate. He next purchased part of Paterson’s estate, on the Tapanui boundary. Mr Smith won many prizes at ploughing matches. He was appointed inspector of roads and bridges for the Tuapeka county in 1921, after serving for seven years as foreman of roads and bridges for the Clutha county. He is survived by his widow, two sons and four daughters.
