In Town And Out

Royal Show In Southland An honour that had fallen on the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association was mentioned by Mr John Macdonald at the annual meeting of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday. The Royal Show, he said, was to be held in Invercargill in 1939. It was not only the Royal Show; it was to be the centennial Royal Show. An effort had been made to have the show held in Wellington in conjunction with the centennial celebrations there, but after due consideration, it was decided that the show should be held in Southland. “We can take credit to ourselves for this,” said Mr Macdonald. “It shows the esteem in which the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association is held.” Rates Written Off

The writing off of £7708 in rates by the Mortgage Adjustment Commission was the subject of adverse comment at yesterday’s meeting of the Southland County Council. Cr W. M. Norman said he was very much surprised that Hawke’s Bay, one of the biggest counties in New Zealand, had not had one penny written off. “We are still getting it in the neck as far as writing off is concerned,” he added. “This is a matter of considerable interest to the Farmers’ Union which is taking it up.” Seasonal Labour on Farms

Semple, Minister of Public Works, that he nad arranged for public works employees to be granted leave of absence for seasonal woi*k on farms, including shearing and harvesting on the same terms and conditions as during the past two years. Mr Semple’s action would be much appreciated by farmers.

Productivity of Southland An example of the productivity of Southland was given by Mr W. A. Ott (chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board) in replying to the toast of the visitors at the annual meeting yesterday of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He said that Southland’s exports for the past year could be valued at £5O a head for every man, woman and child in Southland. Grant to Gore School

The Cabinet has approved of a grant for the erection of additional accommodation at the Gore public school, according to advice received by Mr D. McDougall, M.P., from the Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) yesterday.

Home Defence In Dominion

The advantages of joining the New Zealand Territorial Force are explained in a booklet, “The Defence of New Zealand,” which has been issued hy the Defence Department. Emphasis is laid on the fact' that there is no obligation upon any members of the Territorial Force to serve beyond New Zealand shores. Enlistment is for a period of three years, for home defence only. The booklet is an attractive publication and advances convincing arguments in favour of young men enlisting for service in the Territorial Force.

Southland Team Departs If good wishes counted for anything the success of the Southland Rugby team in the Ranfurly Shield match at Dimedin today is as good as assured.
