“EXPENDITURE TRULY FANTASTIC” MR HARGEST REMARKS ON FUTURE OUTLAY (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, September 9.

“This year’s expenditure, although it is truly fantastic, is not the whole story,” said Mr J. Hargest (Nat., Awarua) during the discussion of the Public Works Statement in the House of Representatives today. “The £20,500,000 in the hands of the Minister is infinitesimal compared with the amounts to which this expenditure commits us in future.”

Mr Hargest estimated that the true expenditure which would be necessary to complete the works already begun would be £50,000,000. or £60,000,000. There were uncompleted, redundant railways and expenditure on making speedways out of already good main roads, besides other' expenditure which would require completion. What he described as ; the sensational statements of the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R.
