“The Danube is deep,” is the frequent retort made by Nazi officials to desperate Jews who petition them asking where they are allowed to go now, says the Vienna correspondent of The Daily Telegraph. Evictions are reaching a climax. Many thousands have been forced from flats and are permitted to reside only in the district where Emperor Leopold created the second ghetto, in the seventeenth century, which is already overcrowded. Sixty thousand Jews have gone abroad. There are still 200,000 anxious to leave.
The anxiety of Italian Jews is increasing, says the Rome correspondent of The Daily Telegraph. Many concerns are at a standstill after an announcement that the Fascist Grand Council will decide the fate of Jews on October The publication of the names of allegedly Jewish professors at universities has aroused a storm, 21 professors declaring themselves “Aryans” and demanding compensation from the newspapers. 'The Rumanian Government has prohibited the entry of Jewish refugees, says a message from Bucharest.
