SMOKING OF OPIUM

FINES IMPOSED ON CHINESE (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 9. Fines totalling £217 were imposed by the Magistrate as a result of a police raid on premises in Haining street. Ah Show, a Chinese laundryman, pleaded guilty to permitting premises of which he was the occupier to be used for the smoking of opium. Twelve other Chinese pleaded guilty to being found on the premises. The Sub-Inspector stated that with the exception of three the accused all had previously been convicted.
