LOWER PRICES FOR CALVES

EFFECT OF FALL IN HIDES A start was made on Thursday with the collection of bobby calves, the prices offered for good calves being 8/-, a drop of 2/- on last year’s price of 10/-. The decrease is due to the fall in the price of skins, and the current figure is actually more than was expected, as farmers were not very optimistic about the prospects for the season. Dairy factories will be beginning ,operations soon and it is expected that one or two will be working this week and that a good many others will be coming in during next week. By that time a steady supply of calves will be coming forward.

The committee controlling the pool decided some weeks ago that it would be impossible to pay a bonus on last season’s calves, and in view of the low prices obtainable for skins throughout the season producers must consider that they were fortunate in securing such a favourable price. The fact that the committee did not suffer a loss is due to the excellent arrangements made with the killers of the calves at the beginning of the season.
