TENNIS CLUB The annual report of the Winton Tennis Club states: — “There. has been another successful year, both from the playing and financial aspect. “The membership of the club has been sustained throughout and the receipts from this source are maintained at a gratifying level. The year began with a credit of £l4 11/- and concluded with a balance of approximately £2l, which includes a sum of £l5 placed to the new pavilion fund. It is pleasing to note that this fund now stands at £5O odd. The expenses for balls were greater this year because the club had three teams entered in the competitions, and the affiliation fees payable to the Southland Lawn Tennis Association were increased from 1/- to 2/6 a member. With the new season’s subscriptions to come in, the financial position must be considered entirely satisfactory. “The Labour Day tournament was again an unqualified success and the club’s thanks are due to the controlling officials. “A team was entered in the Invercargill A competition and two teams in the Central competition, and it is pleasing to record that the senior team on its promotion to Senior A performed most creditably, suffering only two defeats by the winners and runners-up in the competition and only by small margins.

“Increased entries were received for the annual club championships and interesting and keen games were played. An encouraging feature of the past season was the prominent form of the younger members, particularly in the men’s division, Graham Hamilton winning the men’s championship, with G. Horsburgh as runner-up. The women’s champion was Miss E. Pierce, who fought out the final with Miss T. Valli. Several of the club members also took part in outside tournaments and had considerable success.
