UNITED STATES RETAINS CURTIS CUP BRITISH WOMEN WIN ONLY ONE SINGLES MATCH (Received September 9, 7.40 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 8. The United States women golfers retained the Curtis Cup by 5J points to 34 points by wininng five of the six singles matches today. Miss C. Tiernan gained Britain’s only match point by beating Miss Orcutt, 2 and 1. The other scores were: Mrs G. C. Vare (United States) defeated Mrs J. B. Walker (Britain), 2 and 1. Miss P. Berg (United States) defeated Miss Jessie Anderson (Britain), 1 up. Mrs J. A. Page (United States) defeated Mrs A. M. Holm (Britain), 6 and 5. Miss Miley (United States) defeated Miss E. Corlett (Britain), 2 and 1. Miss Glutting (United States) defeated Miss Baird (Britain), 1 up. DRAW OF WINTON CLUB The draw for an eclectic match to be played by the men on the Winton golf links today is as follows:—G. Lindsay v. N. Pigou; L. Lindsay v. P. Gleeson; M. Geddes v. W. Balch; J. Perrelle v. W. Clark; F. Lindsay v. R. Souness; P. Boylen v. H. Ward; O. Smith v. R. Gow; G. Hamilton v. W. Geary; R. King v. W. Brandford; A. B. McDougall v. W. Simmers; Hobbs v. W. Cliene; J. Hewitt v. G. Kang; Carson v. H. Denny; T. Mitchell v. D. Graham; R. Goodall v. N. Young; S. Mehaffey v. F. Rawle; C. Strang v. C. Hughes. In a “top dog” match O. Smith and F. Lindsay staved off a challenge by L. Lindsay and F. Rawle, the match finishing all-square.

In the final of the women’s championship of the Winton Golf Club, Mrs O. A. B. Smith beat Miss I. Shand, 2 up. In the semi-final, Miss Shand had beaten Mrs W. Clark, 2 up. The L.G.U. and silver button match played by the first division of the women resulted:—Miss J. Horner, 109-32-77; Miss I. Shand, 100-22-78; Mrs R. King, 114-32-82. The stroke match played by the second division resulted:—Mrs A. P. Gerrard, 60-18-42; Miss T. Clark, 63-18-45; Miss J. Shaw, 64-18-46. At a meeting of the committee of the Winton Golf Club, Dr P. Gow presided over a good attendance. Closing day was fixed for September 25, when a mixed foursome match over nine holes would be played.
