NEW AWARD FOR BAKERS

WAGES INCREASED 5/- A WEEK WEEKLY HOURS REMAIN AT 44 (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 12. Provision for an increase in wages is made in the new award for bakers and pastrycooks to operate throughout Northern Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury, Westland, Otago and Southland industrial districts. The award was ilssued in the Arbitration Court by Mr Justice O’Regan today. It will take effect from August 22 and remain in force for two years.

There has been no alteration in the weekly hours, daily hours, starting times or penalty rates. Wages have been increased by 5/- a week as follows: Foreman baker or pastrycook to receive £6 5/-; journeyman baker and pastrycook £5 15/-; baker’s labourer £4 15/-; packer £4 15/-. A journeyman jobber is to receive not less than £1 2/- a day or a labourer jobber 19/-, an increase of 2/- in each case. Overtime is to be paid at the rate of time and a-half for the first four hours and double time thereafter, with a minimum payment of 1/6 an hour. Junior labourers starting at under 19 years of age are to receive 6d a week increase in the fourth six months, 1/6 in the fifth six months and an increase of 2/6 a week thereafter. Other juniors receive slight increases in proportion. Female workers have also received an increase. The annual holiday is to be nine consecutive working days on full pay, instead of eight, and the picnic day is cut out. In a memorandum to the award his Honour states that the union asked for a 40-hour week. As it had been decided in 1936 that it was impracticable to carry on the industry in less than 44 hours a week, the matter must be regarded as settled, at any rate until circumstances could be shown to have altered so radically that reconsideration was justifiable.
