TRAWLER VISITS BLUFF

PURCHASED FOR USE AT RIVERTON HEAVY FOG DURING TRIP FROM PORT CHALMERS The launch Elsie, which has been purchased for the fishing industry at Riverton and which is going to that town from Port Chalmers, arrived at Bluff on Sunday afternoon. The master (Mr C. A. Arthur) decided to break the journey at Bluff and intended to sail again yesterday, but the weather was too rough. It is proposed to continue the voyage this morning. The Elsie, an oil-burning trawler, has been purchased from J. and A. Mair., Port Chalmers, by Mr W. King, of Gore, who is connected with the fishing industry and who intends _to operate the vessel in trawling and linefishing at Riverton. Mr King hopes to reach Riverton tomorrow. Port Chalmers was left at 4.30 o’clock on Saturday afternoon and though the seas were not particularly rough the vessel encountered mist and later—in Foveaux Strait—a thick fog which hampered its progress to a certain extent. With the vision so poor and limited it was considered prudent to stand well off from the shore and the vessel was at times a considerable distance out to sea. The voyage to Bluff was nevertheless completed in 24 hours. As Riverton could not have been reached in daylight it was decided to break the journey at Bluff. Built at Port Chalmers eight years ago, the Elsie is an unusually-well-con-structed and well-appointed craft. No iron went into her construction, but only the best of kauri, oak and teak.

VISIT FROM HOCKEY PLAYERS Members of the English women’s hockey team were taken on a motoring tour of Bluff before their departure for the north. They were accompanied by the manager of the team (Miss E. J. Warwick) and friends from Invercargill and Gore. Before lunch they drove round the Point and although the day was dull and misty the weather cleared sufficiently to enable them to obtain a good view of Foveaux Strait, with Stewart Island in the background. The party had lunch at Bluff and in the afternoon visited Bluff Efill and inspected the wharves. The players expressed the opinion that New Zealanders were, generally, very hospitable to English visitors. CARD TOURNAMENTS There was a good attendance at the weekly euchre evening organized in aid of the funds of the Bluff Dominican Convent, which was held in the Willard hall. Mrs M. McTigue won the women’s first prize and Mrs A. Nightingale was second. Mr G. Hardy was the winner in the men’s section and Mr W. Lowe was second. The lucky number competition was won by Mr L. Mortimer. The weekly flag 500 tournament, held in the Athenaeum hall in aid of the funds of the Ladies’ Bowling Club, was very successful. The successful players were Messrs J. Thompson and Ford and Mrs W. Gilson. The winners of the lucky number competition were Messrs A. E. Budd, N. Cooper and J. Plank. HOTEL GUESTS Club.—Messrs J. Allen anu McGregor (Dunedin), H.
