DOMINION CLOTHING TRADES AWARD

NO AGREEMENT ON MOVE TO SECURE AMENDMENT

(United Press Association) i CHRISTCHURCH, June 29. The Dominion Clothing Trades Award issued by the Second Court or Arbitration has not pleased either the employers or the workers. Since the provisions of the award were announced negotiations have been carried on with a view to approaching the Court to secure an amendment, but these have broken down and the award will have to be accepted as it stands, A statement to this effect was made this morning by Mr J. Roberts, secretary of the Canterbury Tailoring Trades Union, who last week visited Wellington about the negotiations. “An attempt was recently made to secure an amendment to the award, Mr Roberts declared. “It was felt by both parties that the award was not satisfactory and accordingly negotiations were opened to make a settlement that would be reasonably acceptable to both sides. However, those negotiations have failed and the award will now have to be accepted as it was issued. This is because of the fact that it is necessary for both parties to be unanimous when approaching the Court for an award amendment We failed to reach that unanimity.” Referring to the unsatisfactory conditions in the award, Mr Roberts explained that the employers objected to the rates of pay given to apprentices and improvers, and the workers objected to the rates set out for journeymen, which were less than the Arbitration Court pronouncement fixing the rate of pay for unskilled workers at 2/4 an hour. AWARD FIXED FOR ONE MONTH METAL WORKERS’ ASSISTANTS (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 29. When the Otago and Southland Metal Workers’ assistants’ dispute was called in the Arbitration Court today an announcement was made that to allow time to negotiate for a Dominion award both parties had agreed to a short award of a month’s duration. Accordingly the Court fixed an award with tiie existing conditions retained, the only difference being wages in conformity with the Court’s pronouncement on standard rates.
