OBITUARY

SIR WILLIAM MACKENZIE, ANATOMIST (Received June 29, 11.20 p.m.) MELBOURNE, June 29. The death occurred today of Sir William Colin Mackenzie, a ' former director of the Australian Institute of Anatomy at Canberra. He was 61 years old. Sir William, who resigned the directorship early this year because of illhealth, was regarded as one of the most distinguished comparative anatomists in the world. His collection of anatomical specimens, which he presented to the Commonwealth in 1924 as foundation of the Institute of Anatomy, attracted visits by anatomists from all over the world.

McMURRICH The de.ath occurred at Wellington suddenly on Monday night of Mr Laurence Keelan McMurrich, chief engineer of the Union Steam Ship Company’s inter-island express steamer Rangatira. Mr McMurrich was on duty on Monday at his ship, which is undergoing a survey, seemingly in his usual state of health. He died at his home in Seatoun road, Kilbimie, late that night. Mr McMurrich" was bom' at Onehunga on February 20, 1886, and after serving his apprenticeship with the New Zealand Government railways joined the service of the Union Steam Ship Company on May 28, 1907, as sixth engineer of the Aparima. After serving in a considerable mimber of the company’s vessels he was _ appointed chief engineer of the Koromiko in September 1919. He was subsequently chief engineer of the Kaitangata, Kittawa, Flora, Corinna, Kakapo, Kokiri, Waitemata, Tarawera, Arahura, Kaitune, Moeraki, Narbada, Waiotapu, Mararoa, Tahiti, Monowai, Maunganui, and Makura. From February 1928 to July 1931, Mr McMurrich was acting as assistant to the superintending engineer and served in a similar capacity from October 1932 to March 1933. He was appointed chief engineer of the Rangatira in January 1934, a post he retained until his death. Mr McMurrich leaves a widow, one son and three daughters.
