MAYOR RETAINS OFFICE

President Of League ONLY ONE NOMINATION OFFERED There was only one nomination for the. office of president at the annual meeting of the Southland Progress League yesterday and that was the retiring president, Mr John Miller, Mayor of Invercargill. Mr Miller had previously announced that he would not accept the position for another year because of the pressure of his ordinary duties as. Mayor. ’ At the meeting yesterday he said that on the day of the ordinary meetings of the executive of the league he heal to attend the Southland Hospital Board’s meeting from 10 a.m.' till 4 p.m. and then probably another gathering before the league’s meeting in the evening. If there was another candidate he would be only too pleased to be relieved of the office. A motion that nominations close followed Mr Miller’s nomination and Mr Miller was declared elected. The Mayor, after extending a welcome to the visiting delegates, said that finance was their greatest difficulty, and it was hard to get any more than what they had been getting for some time. Much more could be done by way of publicity if more money was forthcoming. The sum of £lOOO was expended some time ago, the league, the Railway Department and Otago combining in advertising the two provinces. The Bluff-Melbourne service should be one of their main planks in the coming season and he hoped pressure would be brought to bear to have this

service established. Milford Sound, the proposed Queenstown-Glenorchy road the Blackmount-Manapouri road, air services and the South Islands Travel Association were other interests of the league that Mr Miller referred to. The annual report was adopted. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr John Miller; vice-presi-dents, Messrs A. T. Newman (Mayor of Gore), John Cameron (Mayor of Bluff), W. H. Overton (Mayor of Queenstown), Dr N. G. Trotter (Mayor of Riverton); members of executive other than local body representatives, Dr J. A. Pottinger and Dr J. G. Macdonald and Messrs H. F. Drewe, M.
