GORE

NATIONAL PARTY ANNUAL MEETING OF BRANCHES At the combined annual meeting of the Gore branch and the Gore women’s branch of the New Zealand National Party, Mr L. Colbourne, organizer for Otago and Southland, addressed the meeting on the growth of the party in the south, emphasizing the necessity for members to be active. His remarks were supplemented by Mr T. L. Macdonald, the party’s candidate for Mataura, who outlined the work already done in the Mataura electorate. The support in the outlying districts had been greatly encouraging, said Mr Macdonald, and with a further increase in the Gore membership the party’s position would be very sound. Mr R. S. Green presided over a good attendance and he had associated with him Mrs J. Stewart, of Pyramid,

deputy-chairwoman of the womens branch. The annual report, which disclosed good progress, was adopted. For the Gore branch, Messrs R. S. Green and W. D. Shelton were reelected chairman and secretary respectively. Mrs E. Paterson and Mrs P- .M. Cochrane were appointed to similar positions in the women’s branch, with Miss J. Oswin as assistant secretary. Strong committees were elected for each branch, with executive and finance committees in addition. BOWLING CLUB’S ANNUAL REPORTS “Extensive improvements have been carried out during the season to the buildings and surroundings,” states the 40th annual report of the Gore Bowling Club. “The most important works were the painting of the pavilion, additions to the coalshed and the retimbering of the green. “Because of the efforts of the greenkeeper (Mr McGill), and the supervisor (Mr S. Preece), the green at the

beginning of the season provided an ideal playing surface. It was affected during the season through the dry weather, but in spite of this setback ahigh standard of play was maintained. “The club regrets to record the death of Messrs D. Dewar, F. S. Graham and W. Baker, and to the relations it tenders its sympathy. Competitions were again well catered for, and the enthusiasm shown by members made these games enjoyable. This year the Day Cup was won by Hokonui, and the club extends its congratulations to this club. Various members of the club took part in outside tournaments and met with a measure of success. S. Preece was the skip .of the winning pair at the Roxburgh tournament, while F. Finlayson (life member) and A. C. Taylor won their section outright in the Dominion tournament, but were eliminated after winning five games. The results of the club competitions were as follows: Champion singles, A. Wilson; runner-up, H. Graham; champion pairs, G. H. Anderson and S. Preece (s); runner-up, J. Haigh and A. .Caverhill (s); shield rink, Messrs W. Wilson, E. Columb, H. Graham and F. Murray; Murihiku Cup rink, Messrs W. Wilson, H. Graham, A. Taylor and F. Murray; Southland representatives, Messrs S. Preece and H. Graham; British team representatives, Messrs W. Scobie, D. Harvey, E. Columb and A. Taylor; Eastern District pairs, J. Haigh and A. Caverhill (s); colts’ singles, J. Casey; runner-up, E. Downes. “A long-felt want has been supplied this year in the form of a past-presi-dents’- board. The board is of an attractive design and is quite an asset to the club. At the close of the season the green was top-dressed, and, given favourable weather conditions, should prove an ideal playing surface for the coming season- Considering the heavy expenditure during the season, the balance-sheet shows a very sound position.”

HOKONUI CLUB The annual report of the Hokonui Bowling Club states that the club is in a satisfactory financial position, this being the first year since the erection of the pavilion in 1928 that the funds have been in credit. “The buildings and plant are in good condition,” states the report, “minor repairs only being required from time to time to maintain a good standard. Ifae green was in excellent condition throughout the season and the members of the club enjoyed a good season’s play. “Two teams were entered in the Eastern Southland inter-club competition, and the A team, after a play-off with Edendale, was successful in winning the competition. The results of the various club competitions were as follows: —Champion singles: I. W. Martin, D. F. Tait, runner-up; champion doubles, A. D. Crawford and F. G. Parsons, I. W. Martin and J. Ritchie runners-up; handicap doubles, A. Johnston and J. A. Wallis and D. Shields and A. J. Clearwater tied; colts’ singles, J. A. Browning; S. B.

Taylor runner-up; promiscuous aggregate, L. Taylor. “Promiscuous play was introduced early in the season, and games were played on Monday evenings throughout the season. These matches were well patronized and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, and the committee recommends that they be established as permanent club competitions. “Several friendly matches were arranged, games being played with Eastern and city clubs and as far afield as Kaitangata. The club was represented in the various Southland and EasternSouthland championships, also in the British bowlers’ match played on the club’s green and in the Otago match played on the Southland green. The club was well represented at the Otago, Southland, Central Otago and Dominion tournaments, and the committee wishes to congratulate the following players: M. Campbell and J. A. Wallis, winners of the Christmas pairs at Millers Flat; H. Cuttriss, I. Henry, A. W. Thomson, S. Preece, winners of the Easter rinks at Roxburgh; A. D. Crawford, F. Steel, I. W. Martin and F. G. Parsons, runners-up in the South Otago rinks at Stirling; B. Graham, F. J. Murray, A. Johnston and C. Hamilton, third place in the Christmas rinks at Alexandra; A. Johnston and C. Hamilton, fourth. place _ in the New Year pairs at Invercargill. “Mr B. Graham is to be complimented on the very successful colts’ competition and tournaments that he introduced during the season. Because of his energetic efforts he stimulated interest for beginners in the district and benefited the game considerably. “A very successful one-day rinks tournament was held, and the committee wishes to thank all those bowlers who supported the club, also the Gore and Mataura clubs, which so kindly placed their greens at the club’s disposal. The committee hopes that this will become an annual fixture, _as tournament play is undoubtedly gaining favour each year. “The committee regrets to report the death of Mr J. N. McArthur, who was a member of the club, also Mr A. S. Wallis, who was a regular attender at the card club.” BUILDING SITES SOLD During the last few years many new houses have been erected in West Gore, and it has been found necessary to extend formed streets in order to open up more land for building. This section of the town is now fairly thickly populated and the opportunity for securing additional sites in this area was given by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Company Limited, when they offered at auction on account of the estate of the late Mr Lewis Courts, 75 freehold sections fronting /Elizabeth, Thomas, Frank, Lewis, Gertrude, .Maud and Joseph streets. The size of the sections ranged from 31.7 poles to five acres. There was a large crowd present at the auction and keen interest was taken in the proceedings, but of the 75 sections offered only six were sold, the reserves on practically all the sections being greatly in excess of the buyers’ ideas of value.
