ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

OLD BOYS CONGRATULATED The weekly meeting of the Southland Football Association was held last evening. The president, Mr M. O’Rorke, was chairman. The association decided to accept the City Council’s offer of extra ground at the South school. Transfers for A. Creighton and H. Bennie were granted. The Old Boys’ Club, in relinquishing the Biggar street ground, handed £1 to the association. The Old Boys’ Club was congratulated on winning the Bell Shield and on the good class of football played by its team. It was decided, because of the dangerous condition of the South ground, to cancel all junior games. ~ An encouraging letter was read from one of the leading school masters about Association football in schools. It was stated that with careful and diplomatic handling the association might in the near future gain its aim—Association football in schools. The referees for today’s games are as follows: Thistle v. Central, Mr T. McMurdo; Corinthians v. Mataura, Mr A. W. Johnson. MATAURA TEAMS FOR TODAY The following is the Mataura team to play Corinthians at Invercargill:—Cullen, McCormack, G. Gilchrist, J. Hardie, Jenkins, Ramsay, H. McKinnon, Mitchell, A. Hardie, A. Todd, W. McKinnon. Emergencies: W. Gilchrist, A. Giles, J. Billington. GOLF VETERAN CHAMPION OF FRANCE PARIS, June 23. Marcel Dallemagne, who is 65 years of age, broke the course record and won the French open golf championship with a total of 282.
