Settlement’s Chances Favoured SWORDSTICK EXPECTED TO BE PROMINENT The win-and-place system of betting will operate at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s fixture today, for which strong fields are listed. Last Link and Sunny Comet both raced well enough in the hurdle events at Wingatui to entitle them to support in the Hinds Hurdle Handicap. Silver Sight is well up to this company and along with The Surgeon can be expected to make a race of it. Settlement will be having his first race in the Mayfield Hack Handicap since he won over 101 furlongs at Wingatui. On that occasion he stayed on particularly well and should again be hard to beat. Wagner is well up to his big weight, but Settlement may again expect solid opposition from

Valantua, who ran him a close second at Dunedin. Valantua now comes in on 51b better terms than when he was beaten. Of the others Palmyra may cause Settlement and Valantua most concern. There is not a great deal of ■ recent form of those in the Dromore Hack Steeplechase. If he was right Survoy would be hard to beat, but preference may be given to Nightbound, a reliable jumper. Strip is likely to be the favourite for the Moreton Handicap with Financiere and Cocksure also fancied. Swordstick is the logical choice for the, Maronan Handicap, as his recent form has been good. He beat a poor field at Greymouth on Saturday and may stay on too well for Valmarch, a winner-at his last start. Moneyless will be entitled to support because of his good second to Valarth at Dunedin.
