LAST YEAR’S FIGURES EXCEEDED

SEVERAL SOUTHLANDERS ENGAGED (Special to The Times) CHRISTCHURCH, June 24. The Canterbury Jockey Club received nominations today for the six principal events to be decided at the New Zealand Grand National steeplechase meeting in August. The total reached 222 as against 219 last year, details being as follows- 1938

All of the leading steeplechasers in New Zealand are included in the list for this year’s big race, including previous winners in Valpeen (twice), Royal Limond and Nocturnus, while Irish Comet, who was third last year is again nominated. Santoft, last year’s Wellington steeplechase winner, Clarion Call, Red Sun, Black Banner, Quinopal, Bally Brit, Burwood, Royal Banquet and Flashlight have all been winners this winter, and Jolly Beggar, Bryce Street, Brigadore, Punchestown . and Arctic Star have raced prominently. The Grand National Hurdles has also attracted the best available material from both islands. Last year’s' winner, Cottingham, is off the scene but the minor place-getters, Clarion Call and Brigadore, are in again. Winners this

year to date are Jolly Beggar, Courtyard, Donegal, Silk Sox, Erination, Corban, John Charles, Innes Lad, Lone Raider, Full of Scotch and Spender while several others have shown good form. Catalogue and Dictate winner and runner-up in last year’s. Winter Cup, have been nominated again. The list of 52 is a most attractive one and represents the best form manifest in recent months in the Dominion. The entries are as follows:—
