The engagement is announced of Dorothy, only daughter of Mr and Mrs D. Fraser, Racecourse road, Invercargill, to Roderique McLellan, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. L. Mclvor, Ferry street, Wyndham.

Mrs C. R. Story, Venlaw, was a visitor to town yesterday. Mrs T. O’Byrne and Miss Eileen O’Byrne, Dalrymple street, leave today to spend a holiday in Wellington. Mr and Mrs T. Breen, of Oamaru, have been the guests of Mrs J. Meehan, Wrights Bush. Miss Catherine Todd, Avenal, leaves on Wednesday for Timaru, where she will complete her training in the public hospital. Mrs W. McLellan, of Gorge Road, with her small daughter, Pauline, is spending a holiday in town with her parents, Mr and Mrs J. T. Blight. Miss F. Price, of Garston, and Miss M. Pritchard, of Gore, have' been the guests of Mrs H. C. Hurrell, Avenal road.

Miss Marjorie Knight, of Yorkshire, England, who is the guest of Miss May Manson, Ettrick street, leaves on Monday for Dunedin, flying from there to Blenheim on Tuesday. Mrs A. Owen-Johnston, Thomson street, entertained a number of friends during the week in honour of Miss Catherine Todd, who leaves next week for Timaru.

Mrs E. C. Tapley, Conisborough, Duke street, and Miss Helen Buchan have returned from a holiday at Burwood

station, Mossburn, and Miss Buchan is staying with her sister, Mrs A. B. Moffett, Albert street. Mr and Mrs Howard Sutton, of Moa Flat, were visitors to town yesterday. On their return to the country they were accompanied by Mrs Sutton’s mother, Mrs B. C. Basstian, Tweed street, who is their guest. A kitchen evening was arranged by Mrs H. Aldridge at her home in Eye street recently in honour of Miss Noreen Lynch, whose marriage takes places next month. There were about forty guests and the evening was spent in competitions and games, and a bouquet was presented to the guest of honour. Mrs Pearson, Dunedin, has returned north after a visit to Mrs D. McEwan, Mitchell street, for the twenty-first birthday party for Miss Annie Storrie. Earlier in the week Mr and Mrs McEwan went to Dunedin, where they also gave a party for Miss Storrie. There were nine tables in play at the recent evening held by St. Catherine’s Convent Ex-Pupils’ Association Bridge circle in the Brown Owl. The highest scores were: Contract, Miss D. Short; auction, Miss Bunbury ; and the hidden number was won by Mrs Murray Wilson.

“Ein Linden Garten” is the name of the programme chosen by the Music Circle of the Southland Women’s Club on Tuesday evening. National costumes will be, worn by the performers, and the items have been taken from grand opera and light opera and the works of Mozart, Schumann and' Schubert. Among the choruses will be “The Blue Danube,” “Hark, Hark, The Lark” and “Tales of Vienna Woods,” which will be accompanied by a piano duo and violin.
