MAX SCHMELING IN HOSPITAL

Max Schmeling, the German heavyweight boxer who was technically knocked out by Joe Louis, champion of the world, in the first round of a bout for the title yesterday, was taken to hospital after suffering from pains in the back throughout the night. An X-ray examination showed a fracture of the muscle attachments to the back and haemorrhage of the lumbar muscles which though painful is not serious. He will remain in hospital for perhaps a week. The X-ray photographs taken of Schmeling in hospital revealed two broken transverse processes on the left side of the spinal column under the kidneys. The transverse processes are protruding segments of bone from the vertebrae. Schmeling has been strapped to his bed. He will remain there until July 2, after which he will be taken in an ambulance and placed on board the liner Bremen to recuperate in Germany. The fight receipts totalled 1,015,000 dollars, of which Louis will receive 321,000 dollars (about £64,200) and Schmeling 160,000 dollars (about £32,000). OVERLIN DRAWS WITH SABATINO SYDNEY, June 23. In a 12-round bout the American, Ken Overlin, making his debut against another American, Atilo Sabatino, fought a draw. Sabatino won the early rounds and cut his opponent’s eye, but Overlin fought back so well in the concluding rounds that he managed to even up the points. NEW BRITISHLIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION LONDON, June 23. Dave Crowley, of Clerkenwell, outpointed the holder, Jimmy Walsh, of Chester, over 15 rounds and deprived him of the British lightweight boxing championship.
