SHIRLEY TEMPLE AS CLEOPATRA

MR BERNARD SHAW’S IDEA LONDON, June 5. Acting on the suggestion of Mr George Bernard Shaw, Mr Sydney Carroll, the Australian-born theatrical producer, has sent a cable message to Shirley Temple, the child film star, asking her to play Cleopatra in Mr Shaw’s play, “Caesar and Cleopatra,” at the open-air theatre in Regent’s Park. “I am not joking,” said Mr Shaw, in a telephone interview. “I have not seen Shirley Temple, but I understand that she is celebrated for playing juvenile parts.” “But what about her American accent?” asked the interviewer.

“Well, what about Cleopatra’s Egyptian accent?” replied Mr Shaw. “Nobody knows what her accent was like.” “But Shirley Temple is only a child of nine,” persisted the interviewer. “I had an idea that she was older,” replied Mr Shaw. “The Cleopatra I imagined was 14 or 15. Anyway, Mr Carroll was quite taken by the idea.”
