VOLUNTARY SERVICE FOR WOMEN

Plans for recruiting 500,000 women for an organization called the Women’s Voluntary Service were announced tonight The Dowager Lady Reading is at the head of the organization, which will not be officially associated with any of the defence forces, but will work in close co-operation with the local authorities, Government departments and other women’s organizations. Its main duties will deal with airraid precautions. Women between 17 and 65 years are being invited to volunteer, whether married or single. They will receive training in anti-gas and general measures. There will be no uniform and no attempt to copy the military type of organization.
